The new EU Product Safety Regulation: What will change from 13 December
On 13 December 2024, the new EU Product Safety Regulation (EU Regulation 2023/988) will come into force. This regulation aims to strengthen consumer protection and ensure that products on the EU market meet the highest safety standards - both online and offline. For companies, this means new requirements and obligations that must be implemented in good time to avoid sanctions.
In this article, we take a closer look at the most important changes in the regulation and explain how TYRIOS supports companies in efficiently fulfilling the new requirements.
Why the regulation was introduced
The new regulations are designed to improve product safety and consumer transparency. Platforms such as Temu and similar providers have often shown how difficult it is for consumers and authorities to contact manufacturers in the event of problems.
The most important changes at a glance:
- Safety requirements for all sales channels: Products sold online must fulfil the same safety requirements as those sold offline.
- Obligation to appoint a responsible person: Companies must appoint a responsible person who is responsible for product conformity within the EU.
- Traceability and transparency: Manufacturers must ensure that their products are traceable along the entire supply chain.
- Rapid response to safety issues: Companies must have an efficient procedure in place to recall unsafe products and inform the authorities.
- Stricter requirements for online marketplaces: Operators of platforms such as Amazon or eBay are obliged to ensure that only safe products are offered on their sites.
What does this mean for me as a retailer?
The GPSR stipulates that the following information must be clearly and visibly displayed for every product offered online:
-
Name or trade name of the manufacturer
-
Postal address of the manufacturer
-
Electronic address of the manufacturer (e.g. e-mail address or website)
If the manufacturer is established outside the EU, the contact details of the responsible economic operator established in the EU must also be provided. This information must be clearly visible on the product page - hiding it in the legal notice is not sufficient. The aim is to ensure complete traceability.
How to implement the requirements with TYRIOS
With the brand function in your TYRIOS system, you can implement the new requirements easily and efficiently. The brand function not only allows you to maintain brand shops, but you can also create extended product descriptions that are displayed fully automatically for all brand products. Follow these simple steps:
-
Search for the brand of your choice.
Pay attention to the correct spelling of your brand.
-
Add an extended product description
- Click on the tab "Extended product description"
- Add a new extended product description and give it the name "Manufacturer information" , for example
-
Enter the necessary manufacturer information
- Name of the brand or manufacturer
- Address
- Electronic address (e.g. email or website)
- For imported goods, you must name the responsible importer within the EU
-
Pay attention to the correct brand assignment
As soon as you have entered the desired brand for your product, the manufacturer contact information is now automatically displayed. However, as these are extended product descriptions, the information is not displayed in the brand shops.
The trade mark function in TYRIOS offers you a wide range of benefits that go beyond mere compliance with the new legal requirements. It not only helps you to save time, but also optimises the presentation of your product pages. Here is a detailed overview:
1. Saving time
The brand function allows you to store all manufacturer information centrally. Once you have entered this information once, it is automatically linked to the corresponding products. This means that you don't have to add information manually for each individual product. This automation saves you an enormous amount of time, especially with extensive product catalogues.
2. Flexibility
With the extended product description, you can not only insert the legally required information such as manufacturer and recall information, but also add additional content. Examples of this are
-
Product highlights: Emphasise special features or unique selling points of your products.
-
Warranty provisions: Provide customers with additional information about the product warranty.
-
Special instructions: Provide information on care instructions, instructions for use or special safety aspects. This content can be customised to the needs of each brand, giving you maximum flexibility.
3. Consistency
The centralised management of manufacturer information and additional content ensures that all product pages have a uniform layout. This not only improves user-friendliness, but also increases customer confidence in your shop. Standardised page structures also make it easier to navigate and find relevant information.
4. Dynamic customisation
If information about a manufacturer changes - such as a new address or changed recall details - you can simply update this in the brand editor. The changes are automatically transferred to all linked product pages. This ensures that your online shop is always up-to-date and legally compliant.
5. SEO optimisation
Detailed, consistent and relevant content helps search engines such as Google to rank your pages better. The brand function helps you to present content in a structured and complete way, which can improve the visibility of your shop in search results in the long term.
