Epson receipt printer: Set up SSL certificate

Description:

TYRIOS pos requires an EPOS-compatible POS printer. With the legal obligation to use a technical security device, two printers are possible here:

  • Epson TM-m30II
  • Epson TM-88VI iHub

Both printers can be connected to the local network via a network cable or - provided the appropriate module is installed - via WLAN. However, the following problem often occurs: A connection is only possible with a valid SSL certificate. The initial SSL certificate from Epson will not work.

Here you will find how to set up the SSL certificate.

Solution:

In the following, we assume that your printer is already on the network. You can check this quite easily by switching off your printer and switching it on again. If it is correctly in the network, it will print out a receipt within a few seconds of being switched on, on which you can find the current IP address.

We recommend that you use the Firefox browser for the setup. Chrome will not allow you to temporarily accept an invalid certificate, depending on your operating system.

  1. Go to the browser and enter the IP address in the address bar. You will get a security message. Click on "Advanced..." and then on "Accept Risk" and continue.

  2. You will now be connected to the printer and asked for a user name and password. This is initially "epson" and the serial number of the printer. With the TM-m30II, for example, you will find the serial number on the back of the printer under the cover.
  3. You will land on the "EpsonNet config" page. On the left side of the navigation you will find the "Security" tab. Click here on "SSL / TLS
EpsonNet config zur Einrichtung des SSL-Zertifikats
  4. You can now create a self-signed certificate by clicking on "create" on the right:
    Selbstsigniertes Zertifikat erstellen
  5. Now enter a name for the printer in the field "Common". This can be the IP address or another name. The validity should not exceed one year, otherwise some browsers will not accept the certificate. Please make a note in your calendar to renew the certificate before it expires.

    Warning

The common name must (!) correspond to the name with which the printer is called in the URL. If you address the printer via the IP address, it must be the IP address.

  6. To activate the certificate directly, you must now reset the printer. Click on "Reset". Your printer will start flashing and will be available again in a few seconds. The IP address will be printed out again.

You have now created a self-signed certificate and can tell your browser to trust this certificate permanently. The further procedure depends on your browser and your operating system. Click on the navigation on the right for further links.
