Regulatory compliance in the tax matrixWhy domestic sales in TYRIOS always require VAT
TYRIOS ensures compliance with legal requirements by blocking tax exemptions such as the reverse-charge mechanism or third-country exports for domestic sales. As sales within your own country are generally subject to VAT, the system actively prevents incorrect configurations for your home country directly within the tax matrix.
In this article, you will learn how to configure the tax matrix correctly to meet legal requirements. We explain the rationale behind system validation and show you how to set your domestic tax rates in a legally compliant manner, ensuring your accounts remain consistent at all times.
How to prevent invalid tax exemptions for domestic transactionsRechtssicherheit in der Tax Matrix
In your home country, the collection of VAT is a legal requirement, as the system does not support a reverse-charge mechanism for domestic transactions. This automation actively protects you from incorrect tax configurations.
Follow these steps to verify how the tax matrix identifies and rejects invalid conditions for your own country.
-
Test the EU tax exemption for your own country
Go to Order Management › Manage Tax Matrix and open a profile (e.g. ‘Standard 19%’). Find the row for your own country (e.g. Germany) and carry out the following test steps:
- In the ‘REVERSE CHARGE Condition ’ field, select the option ‘EU Reverse tax condition ’.
- Click the Save button.
Note: The system will refuse to save the changes. The error message will state the name of the matrix and the country, and explain that domestic sales must always include VAT.
-
Remove the invalid condition and save
To restore the matrix to a valid state, you must correct the incorrect selection:
- Reset the ‘REVERSE CHARGE Condition ’ field in the row for your own country back to ‘none ’.
- Then click the Save button.
The matrix will now be saved successfully.
-
Testing exports to third countries for one’s own country
Now check the safeguards against incorrect export settings for domestic shipments:
- In the row for your own country, select the condition ‘Third country export delivery ’.
- Click Save.
Note: The system will again refuse to save the changes for the same reason, as your own country is not a third country for export purposes. This ensures that your configuration remains legally compliant at all times.
Useful information on correct tax configuration within GermanyImportant information and tips on the tax matrix
To ensure your accounts run smoothly and to comply with tax regulations, please note the following specific points in the tax matrix:
- No domestic reverse charge: TYRIOS does not support the reverse charge procedure for domestic transactions (Section 13b of the German Value Added Tax Act (UStG)). For sales within your own country, statutory VAT is always charged, even if the customer has a VAT registration number.
- Automatic protection: The system protects you from errors. Conditions for EU reverse-charge or exports to third countries are automatically ignored for domestic transactions or blocked upon saving.
- Tax exemptions: Genuine tax exemptions without a specific ‘regime’ (e.g. for certain tax-exempt domestic supplies, such as the sale of multi-purpose vouchers) are still permitted and can be entered in the matrix.
- Support contact: If you believe you absolutely require a domestic exemption, please contact Support, as this is not a standard setup.
