Limit sales to countries

Questions:

  • How can I limit the sale to Germany?

Description:

With the operation of an online shop, the question regularly arises as to how a sale abroad can be prevented. The question is not unjustified, because selling abroad has some legal hurdles - especially when dealing with VAT. That is why stationary traders in particular often want to limit sales to local customers.

To come straight to the point. It doesn't work. At least within the EU, you have to sell to the entire EU since 2018. This is regulated by the EU Anti-Geoblocking Regulation No. 2018/302, according to which the EU obliges you as a trader to enable customers to conclude contracts throughout the EU. Restricting your online shop is therefore not legally sensible and could result in a warning. Fortunately, this is not necessary. The legal act does not oblige you to deliver to the entire EU. Your customers can therefore be expected to pick up products directly from your shop in case of doubt. Of course, this strengthens your stationary business considerably. 

Solution:

So the solution is to limit your delivery area. But how exactly do you do that?

  1. Basically, you should offer a delivery option that is always available without restrictions. This could be, for example, "Pick up in shop".
    1. As a user with extended rights, go to Customer Area > Order Management > Manage Shipping Options.
    2. Create a new shipping option without restrictions
  2. Now you can add the shipping options you would like to offer.
    1. As a user with extended rights, go to Customer Area > Order Management > Manage Shipping Options.
    2. Create a new shipping option
    3. Add a new restriction under "Conditions". For example, restrict the shipping option to the delivery country "DE". This way the shipping option is only offered if the delivery country is Germany. Restriction to the postcode or to a postcode area is also possible.

TYRIOS automatically offers the user only those shipping options that are currently possible. So if the delivery country is not Germany, only the shipping option "Pick up in shop" would be offered in the configuration described above. This is communicated to the customer by default in the order overview as well as in the order emails. The shipping costs within the online shop are also automatically adjusted and only take into account the shipping options that are currently possible.

Note

In principle, TYRIOS is able to automatically recognise the user's country on the basis of the IP address and to automatically select the dispatch option. However, this function is not active by default because the resolution of the IP address - the so-called geo-location determination - does not work 100% reliably. If you wish, you should therefore contact us.
